Trew Through to Skate Semi

Teenage skateboarding sensations Arisa Trew and Ruby Trew are through to Saturday’s semi final of the Women’s Park at the Skateboarding Olympic Qualifier in Budapest.

NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) athlete Ruby is enjoying the competition and the new course they get to try out.

“I really like the course, it’s one of my favourites so far. Some of the lines are kind of tricky trying to work out how much time we have, but overall I’ve liked it.

“It was pretty close, I had to put down a run on my second [run], unfortunately couldn’t get my third but I’ll be back in two days for more,” she said.

“I’m feeling pretty good, just working heaps on my tricks and trying to get them consistent while having fun on the way with my friends.”

After coming away with a gold medal from the Shanghai leg of the Qualifer held last month Arisa Trew was the star of the show as the 14-year-old beat Japan’s Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Hiraki Kokona and the reigning Olympic champion Yosozumi Sakura to win the women’s park skateboarding event there. She came into the final in Budapest ranked second on the global standings.

After putting down two good runs overnight, she booked her spot in Saturday’s semi final alongside Ruby Trew (unrelated to Arisa), who is currently sixth in the global standings and also poised to clinch a women’s park quota.
Stifling heat made for a big opening day of competition with Arisa saying: “The heat has been crazy… it’s been really hot since we arrived.

“I’m just really excited to be out here for the final Olympic Qualifier before Paris. It’s just really cool… I’m loving skating and competing.

Day two action will continue tonight, with the men’s park and women’s street competitors set to line up in the preliminary heats, with Tokyo gold medalist Keegan Palmer and Aussie top ranked female Chloe Covell in action.
