NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) scholarship holder Molly Picklum was pipped for another World Surf League title by America’s reigning world champion Caitlin Simmers in the man-made waves of the Abu Dhabi wave pool.

After a spirited comeback, the 22-year-old from Gosford on the state’s Central Coast pushed Simmers to the last ride of their contest at Hudayriyat Island.

The Australian scored a clutch 7.70 point with her last ride, allowing her to claw the lead back from Simmers. It meant the American needed to score 7.04 or more to win the title – and despite taking a tumble towards the end of her ride she scored 7.40.

Simmers celebrated the narrowest of victories – by just 0.40 points.
