NSWIS diver Brittany Broben has announced her retirement over the weekend; the decision coming after injury forced her to miss the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Beginning her diving career in 2007, Broben was a member of the Brisbane National Talent Identification program and was quick to assert her talent and become an international representative for Australia.

Although notching up a number of Australian champion titles in various events created career highlights, Broben highlighted her feat of breaking 400 points and winning the USA Grand Prix event in 2011 as one of the standouts.

However standing tall above the rest was her Olympic silver medal, which she won in the women’s 10-metre platform event at the London Games.

At just 16-years-old, Broben was the youngest athlete on the Australian Olympic Team for London 2012 and said that she will always be proud of her achievements, which also include qualifying for the Rio Games, despite having to withdraw due to injury

“I will always be so proud of the fact that I am an Olympic Silver Medallist, and whilst I did not quite get to Rio, being selected in the team (Broben elected to withdraw due to injury) made me feel like a dual Olympian,” Broben told Diving Australia.

“After the challenges I had had since 2013, just getting to a place where I was diving well enough to be selected for Rio, was something I will always be proud of – but I really wanted to dive at my best in Rio and sadly that was not ultimately possible”.

Currently recovering from shoulder surgery, Broben continued to say that her push for Rio had been refreshed after a move to Sydney and the NSW Institute of Sport last year.

“After moving to Sydney to work with Chava Sobrino late last year, I want to thank him wholeheartedly for helping to reignite my passion for diving,” she said.

Bidding her a fond farewell was Diving Australia CEO David Bell, praising her role as a representative of the sport.

“Brittany has been just an amazing ambassador for our sport and we are so proud to have had her as one of our premier athletes for the better part of the last 10 years,” Bell proudly said.

“On behalf of the Australian diving community, we wish her every success in the future and hope to play a small part in helping her achieve her next successes”.

The NSW Institute of Sport congratulates Brittany on an outstanding career.
