New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) scholarship athlete Oliver Hoare has made the tough call to not compete in next month’s world championships, deciding to instead “shut down” his campaign to ensure he’s fit for the next year’s Paris Olympic Games.

Hoare, Australia’s middle distance champion, explained the reason he would miss the 1500m event in the world championships, which start in Budapest on August 19, followed the results of an MRI.

He told his followers on Instagram it was a tough decision – especially, considering the form he is in – but stressed it was the right one.

“I feel like I might be oversharing but I think personally it’s good to be transparent about the highs and the lows when it comes to professional athletes and their craft,” Hoare wrote.

“Up here in St Moritz (Switzerland) I was able to get some treatment and an MRI to figure out what the discomfort was and the news wasn’t great. I have a small grade-one sports hernia and significant swelling in the pubic synthesis, athletic pubalgia.

Which means I had two options; 1. I continue to worlds under painkillers to train and compete which would probably make it worse. Then after try to begin the process of recovery and the possibility of surgery making it a close call to the Olympic trials.

“2. Shut down my year and focus on the recovery process now and be ready for the Olympic year.

“It’s obviously an easy call looking in but it was a hard decision to make for me. I had a disappointing worlds last year and this year felt like I could do something special. I worked so hard and feel like I couldn’t showcase that but that’s life and so many athletes go through the same struggle if not worse.”

This little boy [a photo Hoare posted of himself as a child] believed he could do something big on the world stage and he never gave up on that dream.

“Neither will I.”
