The annual NSW Institute of Sport Awards will take place this evening, with a throng of Olympic and Paralympic stars lining up among the finalists for the major awards of the evening.

Hosted by Alan Jones AO and to be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the night will see NSWIS recognise their finest athletes, coaches and sport programs.

Highlighting the night will be the most coveted awards, the ‘ClubsNSW Male Athlete of the Year’ and ‘Sydney City Toyota Female Athlete of the Year’.

There will also be a special presentation to 2008 Olympic gold medallist Matthew Mitcham, who will be inducted into the ‘NSWIS Most Outstanding’. The award is presented upon the retirement of athletes who have made a unique personal contribution to their chosen sport and have achieved outstanding international success.

Mitcham will be the seventh inductee and joins Ian Thorpe OAM, Alyson Annan OAM, Michael Milton OAM, Bradley McGee OAM, Louise Sauvage OAM and Liz Ellis OAM.

While the awards are what the evening is all about, here’s what else to keep an eye out for:

Sugar High Desserts: Yes, we’re aware that this isn’t the first choice that our Senior Dietitian recommended, but you’re allowed a cheat day every now and then.

However from time to time our athletes keep us honest about these dietary things, just ask Jarryd Hughes who took us to task about the dessert choice for tonight!

Gelato Messina: But with Jarryd’s concerns put to rest, we’re also excited to have Gelato Messina along tonight too. Make sure you can try one of their creations on the rooftop!

Zumbo Patisserie: And to top it off, Zumbo Patisserie are also coming along with a bundle of delicious treats, and in and ode to the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, these desserts have been created with a little Brazilian flair!

Of course if you’re coming along we want to see what you get up to! So be sure to also bring your witty captions, photogenic faces and post your photos to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and tag them as #nswisawards – we’ll be highlighting the best posts of the night!

With plenty of memorable moments since then (not all of them just sports results!), tonight we’ll find out who walks away with the awards for 2016!
