NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) athlete Madeleine Gough is among eight Dolphins selected for the open water team heading to Doha for the World Championships in February 2024. Along with Moesha Johnson, the women will back up their 2022 and 2023 10km performances in the  Women’s 10km event.

Nicholas Sloman, a silver medallist from the weekend’s World Cup event in Portugal, has been selected for the Men’s 10km event, alongside Kyle Lee who makes his World Championship debut in the 10km event.  These events serve as the final selection opportunity for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

Bailey Armstrong, Robert Thorpe (rookie Dolphin), Chelsea Gubecka and Bianca Crisp have also been selected in the Men’s and Women’s 5km events.

For Gubecka, who has already qualified for the 10km event at Paris Games, this will be her seventh World Championships, the most of any Dolphin.

High Performance Director Greg Shaw congratulated all of the athletes selected.

“Performances over the last 12 months by our Open Water swimmers both domestically and internationally has demonstrated that our top performers can consistently deliver at the highest level and hopefully the momentum can continue to push them to international success and qualification for the Paris Olympics.

We want to especially congratulate the four swimmers selected to compete for the remaining Olympic Marathon Swimming spots in the 10km event and wish them the best of luck.”

The team will depart for Doha on 25 January, with the competition starting from 3 February.
