Paralympic medallist Madison de Rozario has finished fifth in the prestigious New York City marathon, the final of the six Marathon Majors of the 2024 season, closing out a memorable year that featured the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games Paris 2024.

De Rozario finished the gruelling course in a time of 2:00:57, pipped for fourth position by Eden Rainbow-Cooper (2:00:21).

American Susannah Scaroni regained the women’s wheelchair title she won for the first time in 2022, clocking in at 1:48:05.

Hellen Obiri of Kenya looked on course for a successful title defence in the women’s race, but compatriot Sheila Chepkirui moved clear in the closing stages to take victory in 2:24:35.

Vivian Cheruiyot, at the age of 41, made it a Kenyan podium sweep.

In the men’s professional event, Dutchman Abdi Nageeye kicked away from Evans Chebet to win the men’s race in 2:07:39. Albert Korir was third with Ethiopia’s reigning champion and Olympic gold medallist Tamirat Tola fourth after he was dropped just over 6km from the finish.

The 33-year-old, who was hoping to achieve the first successful men’s title defence since 2013 and become the first man to win the Olympic and NYC marathons in the same year, still holds the course record of 2:04:58 from 12 months ago.

The men’s wheelchair event finished first, with American Daniel Romanchuk re-capturing the NYC title for the first time since 2019, outsprinting David Weir for a winning time of 1:36:31.
