Convinving first win for NSWIS netballers in NZ

NSWIS have had a convincing win over the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in their Round One Super Club game at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson, New Zealand on Sunday 2 July.

NSW Institute of Sport Head Coach Briony Akle, was impressed with the team’s performance.

“I think they did a really good job against quality competition,” she said after the match.

“The fact that we got so many of them out there was fabulous, I think they all really enjoyed the rolling subs.

“It was complete team effort out there, they smashed my expectations considering we haven’t really been together longer than a week.

“They’ve combined really well and we had options either end of the court, it was especially exciting for Ang and Tayla who took to the court in an international competition for the first time and performed exceptionally well.

However, Akle said there is always room for improvement ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Jaguars.

“There’s always things to work on, I’d like to see the team contesting more ball”.

The opening exchanges were typically fast and furious but it was NSWIS who had the better of things early on. NSWIS’s strong presence across the whole court was lead by WA Taylah Davies who created a range of impressive turnovers and deflections to assist NSWIS in taking the lead 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Tayla Fraser took to the court at the beginning of the second quarter to make her debut on the international netball scene. Fraser provided some impressive feeds into shooters, Sophie Garbin and Kristina Brice. Going into the half time break NSWIS had scored a notable 20 goals in comparison to UTT’s 9 to strengthen their lead 39-22.

NSWIS’s third quarter was all about speed and intensity, rolling through players and never letting UTT become comfortable with the play. This worked well as shooters Georgia Marshall and Ang Frketic maintained the team’s impressive lead 55-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Defensive players Lauren Moore, Maddy Turner, Toni Anderson and Sarah Klau put on stand out performances to shutdown UTT’s attacking end. NSWIS continued to increase their lead until the final buzzer rang, with the scoreboard showing a well earned result 74-46.

NSWIS will play Gauteng Jaguars today, Monday 3 July at 3 pm NZST (1 pm EST). This will be broadcast live via SKY Sport 4 and Netball New Zealand Facebook page.
