Commuters at St Peter’s Station are in for a surprise when station master and aspiring Olympian archer, Peter Boukouvalas, asks for their tickets while wearing medals from his recent performance at the 2023 Pacific Games.

Boukouvalas won silver medals in both the Archery Recurve – Single 720 Round 70m Male and the Archery Recurve – Match Play Male.

The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) scholarship holder was one of four Australian archers selected by the Australian Olympic Committee to compete at the Pacific Games, the first time Australian archers were included in the event and eligible for medals.

“It was great to see archery included within the Pacific Games for the first time,” Mark Wilson, NSWIS Senior Coordinator Archery said.

“The event allowed our athletes to compete for medals at an international multi sport event, and the exposure to other sports and other countries is something very unique to an event such as this.”

The presence of archery at the event has lifted the profile of the sport within the Australian Olympic movement, ensuring Australian archers are part of next year’s Olympic Games and the competition was watched by Pacific Games Chef de Mission Ken Wallace, Deputy Chef Amy Jones and AOC President Ian Chesterman.

“This was a key event of the year being an early opportunity to qualify the spots for Paris. There was pressure on the team going away to perform, where Australia was favourites to earn the spots and to come home with medals.”

The event also included the Continental Qualifier for Paris 2024 with a mixed team event.

Boukouvalas now turns his attention to the Olympic Trials taking place in Canberra, 17 – 21 January 2024.
