This week marks the start of a new era for the NSWIS Men’s Road Cycling Team. Having been granted a UCI international licence at the start of the year, for the first time riders in NSWIS colours are lining up at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour is Australia’s oldest cycling stage race, and it attracts some of the biggest teams and riders in the world. This year double Tour de France champion Chris Froome and climbing sensation Esteban Chaves will be on the start line.

The NSWIS team features some of the most promising young cycling talent in Australia – consisting of Jake Kauffman, Tom Robinson, Alex Wolher, Dan Fitter, Josh Taylor, Ayden Toovey and Dylan Sunderland.

NSWIS Team Director Ben Kersten is excited about the riders pitting themselves against the best in the world, but also isn’t overawed by the names lining up alongside them.

Kersten said, “We are here to be part of the race. It is not enough just to come here, and we are not going to be shy about racing with teams like Sky and Orica Scott. There will be opportunities available and it up to us to make the most of them.”

Despite their relative youth most of the riders in the NSWIS team have experience of riding in UCI international events, but for the team as a whole this represents a big step forward into the rigours of international competition.

You can keep up to date with how the team gets on via the NSWIS website.
